Grant towards re-thatching of hall roof and replacement gas boiler

Posted: 13th October 2014

Funding: £13,832
Scheme Type: Normal Grants
Project Type: Community Buildings
Area: Cotswold District Council

South Cerney Village Hall, School Lane, South Cerney, Gloucestershire, GL7 5TZ

Being probably the only thatched village hall in the county of Gloucestershire, South Cerney Village Hall is a very expensive place to maintain. Thatch lasts only about 25 years and this period seems to be diminishing as the wheat straw used appears to be getting weaker and the weather less clement. Last year the front slope of the roof was re-clad and looks absolutely marvellous. That cost South Cerney village hall committee £20,000.

The gas boiler had to be replaced with an energy saving condensing unit just in time for the start of the worst cold winter for years. The new thatch also helped as it is a top class insulation material.

The hall committee received help towards the cost from both the Parish Council and from Cotswold District Council but £13,832, the major part of the £25,000 total came via The Gloucestershire Environmental Trust.
