The Nelson Trust’s Hub Enterprises will open the doors of Cheltenham’s alcohol-free entertainment venue, The Sober Parrot, on 5 May 2018
Press Releases - 18/05/2018
The Nelson Trust's Hub Project is launching its latest community enterprise - The Sober Parrot. This will be Cheltenham's first late night entertainment venue with a strictly alcohol-free offer. The project accompanies the Hub Bistro, The Hub Academy and the Hub Maintains, also run by The Nelson Trust in Gloucestershire.
In 2015, the Cheltenham Late Night Levy funded a feasibility study carried out by the Hub and Cheltenham West End partnership. The researchers spoke to over 100 local people and over 78% said they would want, and would use, an alcohol-free live music venue if there was one.
Aimee Davies, Head of Fundraising said "Thanks to the whole community, volunteers and supporters who have pulled together and made it possible to get this far. The project has been widely supported by Gloucestershire County Council, Cheltenham Borough Council, The Office of the Police Crime Commissioner & Late Night Levy, Creed Food Services, Fever Bars, Barnwood Trust, Public Health England, Agency ASHA, Renishaw Charity Committee, Altro Flooring, Ecclesiastical Insurance Volunteers.
"The significant £150,000 investment from Gloucestershire Environmental Trust has been instrumental in ensuring we are able to provide this incredible resource in Cheltenham, I know where I will be holding my meetings this summer! We look forward to serving refreshing summer mocktails from May Bank Holiday."
Everyone will be able to enjoy a mouthwatering menu and mocktail selection. The Sober Parrot team want you to celebrate with them by coming along to enjoy a buy one get one free promotion on all 'cold brew' drinks.
"More and more people are looking for dry venues - it is becoming really popular with young people now. I love being part of something that is open for everyone it feels so inclusive. Thank you Gloucestershire Environment Trust for giving us the money to complete the renovations, the place looks amazing," added Jo Williamson, Manager of The Sober Parrot.
The Gloucestershire Environmental Trust has donated the funds needed to help undertake an extensive renovation of the building, including a new roof, floors, new toilets; completely reconfiguring and restructuring the interior to create a welcoming and inclusive environment that will serve cheltenham's community.
If research on our Hub Bistro is anything to go by, this venue will also have an incredible positive effect on the whole community. The Hub was evaluated by the Public Health Institute at Liverpool John Moore's University; they found that for every £1 invested in the Hub Cafe we could generate over £9.71 of social value.
